Background Information

As Suriname’s oil and gas sector continues to develop, strong public institutions are essential. The Tax Authority plays an important role in ensuring that fiscal obligations, audits and controls are carried out effectively and transparently. To support this, Staatsolie and the Tax Authority entered into a cooperation focused on capacity building for the period 2025–2028.

The programme is designed to strengthen the knowledge and technical skills of tax and customs officers who work with oil and gas-related taxation, audits and import and export flows. It includes training on the fiscal treatment of the oil and gas sector, the development of fiscal guidelines, technical assistance, digital analysis tools and structured knowledge exchange. The programme also supports practical exposure and stakeholder meetings between the Tax Authority, Staatsolie, customs and companies active in the sector.

This initiative is different from a physical donation or infrastructure project. It focuses on institutional strengthening. By investing in people, systems and knowledge, the programme helps the Tax Authority better understand and manage the fiscal aspects of a growing and increasingly complex energy sector.

The cooperation document was signed on 10 April 2026. Through this programme, Staatsolie contributes to long-term capacity building, stronger public-sector expertise and improved readiness for the opportunities and responsibilities linked to Suriname’s oil and gas development.
